“No engagement” is pretty obvious: your Facebook group is dead or dying, with little to no interaction with your members. You may have left the group too.
If your Facebook group is dead or dying, don’t despair. By taking practical and deliberate steps, you can regrow your group to be even better than it was before.
Believe me, I know. I once I walked away from my group because I had followed someone else’s teaching and nothing was happening. Several months after I left, God made it clear that He wanted me to lead the group, so I came back.
I knew I needed to do things differently: consistent content and value-adds to rebuild the group, and a focus on ideal clients and their needs to keep the group growing.
Whether your group has no engagement, or whether you’ve hit a stubborn plateau, you can do this!
How do you get your group talking again? How do you bring it back to life? A lot of group owners ask these same questions, because this happens a lot. Why?
Reason #1: You let it slip away. You didn’t set out to abandon your group, but you just stopped posting. Heh, listen, life happens. You may go through big changes, or your interest shifts, or you’re just tired of grinding.
Reasons #2: You intentionally paused or closed your group because it didn’t dovetail with your business anymore. You got tired of beating your head against a wall, and why should you? Maybe you turned your group over to a new admin. And you left.
Fair enough, it’s your decision. But what if you realize that you shouldn’t have left? That you want to revive your group? That you want to make it bigger and better, not only for yourself but for the people you’re called to serve?
Is that even possible?
It absolutely is. You can rebuild it, even better than before.
I understand this because the same thing happened to me. I started my primary Facebook group in 2021. I was a freelance copywriter, and really wanted a Facebook group.
But as it turned out, I didn’t know what I was doing when I started it. I didn’t have an offer because I was using the group to network and establish my expertise as a service provider. And I didn’t know who my audience was other than Christian entrepreneurs. How they were supposed to help me grow my copywriting business, I really don’t know.
With this huge disconnect between the type of people in the group and what I wanted from the group, let’s just say I didn’t get a ton of engagement.
Eventually I decided to hand my group over to someone else. Then I left… but after six months, I knew I had made a big mistake. I shouldn’t have given up my group because God wanted me to lead it. I needed to go back and rebuild that group into the thriving community it was supposed to be. But I would have to make some real pivots to do it.
I accepted the group back and I stopped just acting like the group’s owner. The group needed a steward, a leader who would guide it in the way its members needed.
I made major changes, but it took some doing. I had to rebuild trust with existing members. I had to get really clear on what I wanted to sell and how to support my ideal clients. And I needed to actively show up every day to do it.
It was hard work, but I learned how. You can too.
The first thing I learned is how to optimize Facebook’s algorithm to re-engage people. Here’s why: the algorithm can be your best friend or your worst enemy.
Best friend: It continually calculates the activity level of your group. It rewards you for high engagement by suggesting your group to other Facebook users that fit your member profile.
Worst enemy: It continually calculates the activity level of your group. But if it only sees crickets, so won’t suggest your group to anyone– even if a Facebook user would be a perfect fit.
What is Facebook looking for? Multiple sources of engagement. So, feed the algorithm with engagement and activity within your group.
These things work together to launch the revival process, and the algorithm will take notice.
The process isn’t overnight! When I came back to reengage my group, there were months and months where there were hardly any responses. That was hard. But I hung on, I kept acting and engaging, and I’m glad I did.
First, set your expectations correctly. You’re not going to go from zero to a hundred in a week. But you can adjust your behavior so growth will occur sooner rather than later.
The foundation of the whole process is to show up every day. That means every single day, every single week, and every single month. Because if you’re not there, there’s nothing for Facebook to show to people. Better yet, when you’re just starting the revival process post twice a day. You won’t have to keep that up forever, but you do need to work hard to re-engage your group and to build that sense of excitement and enthusiasm.
The type of content you create makes a big difference too. Go hard into what you add to the group through your content, which will jumpstart reactions and conversations.
Add special activities to content and you’ll engage people for more than a single post. Regularly offer engagement boosters like Facebook Lives, hosting events, running challenges, and creating multi-day bootcamps.
Your members will spend more time and energy in your group and the Facebook algorithms will take notice.
Give your group a breath of fresh air and a shot of new energy and commitment. Show Facebook that, “Hey, my group is here. It’s here to stay. It’s alive and it’s active.”
Don’t feel guilty or frustrated about a less-than-alive Facebook group, Bring it back to life and purpose so it serves your business, serves your members, and serves God.
