Facebook is making changes to their Live videos. This means that starting now, all live videos on Facebook will be automatically deleted after 30 days.
While many Live video users are a bit panicked, I’m here to reassure you. This shift isn’t just good for Facebook. This shift is very good for you.
On February 19, 2025, Facebook announced a big change to Live Videos. Users can create and share them but after 30 days, Facebook will automatically remove them from storage. They’ll allow users to keep existing Live videos on Facebook for 90 days (May 19, 2025), then they’ll be deleted too.
Don’t worry! It’s a good thing.
First, the move makes sense from Facebook’s perspective. Live videos on Facebook cost Meta a lot of money and management time to store. Yet engagement on Live videos on Facebook falls to nearly nothing after 30 days, and it didn’t make sense for Facebook to spend a lot of long-term resources to keep the live videos on the platform.
Second, this change is ultimately a GOOD thing for Facebook Live creators. Why? Because you can leverage the new policy to bring your Lives to life, build your email lists, and effectively repurpose your content.
There are two big things you need to do right now to protect your Live videos on Facebook.
Facebook is giving you 90 days from their announcement on Feb. 19, 2025 to download your Lives and/or migrate them to online storage. That deadline is May 19, 2025. Facebook promises to provide easier downloading tools. Downloading your Lives will be a project if you have a lot of them, but you only have to do it once. Then you can give them brand new life on Facebook, email, YouTube, podcast; wherever your Lives will get new engagement.
Don’t stop using Lives in your Live videos on Facebook! Post new Lives, just save them right as you post them. And once you’ve saved your existing Lives, use them too–in strategic new ways you wouldn’t have done before.
It’s easy to do. For instance, on save them on YouTube which has a share to Facebook feature. Save them to Dropbox which allows you to share your files on Facebook, including videos. Facebook doesn’t care, as long as it doesn’t have to store your video.
Here’s the business opportunity that Lives represent. Instead of creating Lives that quickly lose engagement, strategically repurpose them for fresh cross-platform content. The only thing that changes is how you store that Live so it won’t get deleted.
This strategic usage represents a huge opportunity to build your email list and podcast audiences.
For example, make access to your Lives into an offer. Instead of just directing people to the Live’s post address, offer access to people who sign up to your email list. If your videos now live safely behind share codes on another storage platform, offer access as a valuable premium for people who sign up for your email list.
Keep nurturing list and group members with your Facebook Lives. When group members tell you that they’re having trouble with something, you will have just the thing for them: a Live where you address that very issue, plus a shareable link and a DM follow-up.
These types of lead generation and nurture will sell your offers, and allow you to serve your people in a higher capacity.
You can even use Facebook’s Live video deletion policy to increase urgency around participating in your Lives. Since a Live video won’t be available after 30 days, encourage your members to tune in live to your event. Even when you reuse and repurpose your Lives, you’ll encourage people to watch a Live right away because it will soon be gone.
You’ll be able to get better engagement, and later you can repurpose the Live as a podcast, or blog, or a lesson for your courses.
The new policy is a great opportunity for you, once you know how to effectively strategize and repurpose all your Live videos. Take advantage of this change to support and grow your business.
