Let’s talk about how to actually build an online community. Growth strategies matter, but creating an active, welcoming space that you’re genuinely proud of is just as important.
You’re probably familiar with the importance of consistency and planning. What you might not have thought that much about is culture. What kind of culture do you want to build into your group for now and in the future? Because a healthy culture reflects you at your best, and benefits your members time after time. This kind of space encourages people to come back again and again. That’s true engagement, and is the key to a thriving Facebook group.
Cheers!

A thriving online community starts with a strong, positive group culture. That kind of culture blends:
There’s one more super important factor: YOU like the culture. It’s a culture of belonging and positivity, of acceptance and truth. It’s also an extension of your personality and business and brand. When that happens, others want to be there too—and they’re more open to your offers.
In 2009, I was a freshman in my brand-new Texas high school. It was so new that the only class ahead of us were sophomores.
I joined the marching band, which is a big deal in Texas. The challenge was that the whole band was starting from scratch. We didn’t have a shared culture or relationships. We didn’t have seniors who knew how things were supposed to go. Our band director was experienced, but he could only do so much with a bunch of inexperienced members.
Our director spent a lot of time talking with us about that. We worked to establish new traditions and good habits as we went along. We learned as we went, and got better and better. But we were too new to do well at regional band competitions, and there were a lot of them. Then our director told us something important: that people were paying attention to us, and not in a bad way. They were rooting for us because we never gave up. And he told us this was so much more important than being big or small, first or last.
I learned that even when you were brand new, as long as you showed up and did your best, people supported you. We were forging a new path—and so can you.
Years later, I took those lessons and applied them to my revived Facebook group. Habits, attitude, communication, and consistency will build your group culture now and into the future.
It’s never too late or too soon to think about what you would like your group to look like, do, and be. Post consistently and share attractive offers that speak directly to your ideal client. Keep track of those results: how many emojis and comments did each post get? How many people attended your event or listened to its recording? How many new clients are you gaining, and how long is your average sales cycle?
Plan events too. Some of them will feel spontaneous and fun; others will be consistent, and people look forward to them repeating. For example, do a Friday training Live. I do this in my group, and I really enjoy it. So do my members, who look forward to it.
And this is just as important. If you want your community to have a certain vibe and a lot of positivity, then track this too: Are your members responding to each other? Are you warmly greeting each new member and encouraging existing members to do the same? Do members feel free to post with your guidelines? Do they comment on each other’s posts as well as yours?
Lead the way by doing these things and encouraging others to do them. Build a healthy, attractive culture by exhibiting the behavior you want your members to model.
There are many paths to build healthy culture into your online community. Allow your online community’s culture to flow from your purpose, what you’re good at, and what you enjoy doing with your group.
This culture creates a space that is productive for both you as a business owner and for your members. They enjoy being there, get value out of the group, feel supported, and know it’s a safe place. In turn, they trust and value you and your offerings.
By building culture now, you can make a long-term impact. And when you know that God is leading you, that impact can be a lot bigger than you ever dreamed.
