Obviously, you’re working hard to make money online with your business. The first step in that process is creating a solid marketing plan that focuses on the key things that help you connect with your ideal clients. There are a lot of thoughts out there about what your marketing plan should include, but there’s one thing that should be at the foundation of everything you do.
I’m sure you’ve heard about the know, like, and trust factor before. It’s hard to go anywhere online and NOT hear about it. But what does it actually mean? I’m going to break down what it means for your audience to know, like, and trust you so you can connect with your target market and make money online easily.
Your audience needs to know you before they’re going to buy from you. So first, being ‘known’ by your audience means getting visible and showing up in the right places.
But it’s so much more than that. It’s also letting them know who you are as a person. One of the biggest drivers for how people make buying decisions is whether they feel like they get along with the person, especially if you’re in the coaching industry. People want to know who you are and what you’re like so they can decide whether to trust you.
Now I’m not talking about airing your dirty laundry on the internet for everyone to see. Social media is not your journal. But you shouldn’t be afraid to get vulnerable and share some of your personality. Getting clear on your brand voice is going to help you understand how to balance this out. If you need some help with this, check out my free brand voice guide that will take you through questions that will give you clarity on your voice.
There’s a lot of scammers out there trying to take advantage of people. You need to show up as a real person so your audience knows you’re there with their best interests in mind. My favorite way to do this is storytelling, but there are lots of ways to get personal in your marketing plan.
Let’s start with the obvious. You are not going to be liked by everyone. We all have different personalities, different traits, strengths, and weaknesses. We’re not all the same, thank goodness!
But it is important to a lot of people that they get along with the person that they’re going to work with. So if you’re going to make money online, you have to find a way to connect with the people who like you.
This goes both ways too. It’s important that you like your clients. You don’t want to be frustrated by your clients’ weird quirks, or find it hard to relate to your students. This is your business and you get to choose who you want to work with.
So how do you find your people, and how do they find you? You show up as yourself. Use your marketing plan to showcase the best parts of yourself and allow your personality to run the show. You set the standard for your business. You get to say “This is the vibe and if you’re cool with that, welcome! If you’re not cool with that, there’s another business down the road, you’ll fit in great over there.”
I don’t want you to feel like you’re limiting your ability to make money online by being selective with who you work with. If you chase after everyone, you’re going to end up running in circles. You have to pick your target and run after it. And if that means you’re polarizing, then so be it.
Be the best thing for one group of people, rather than trying to be something for everyone and missing the mark every time. Show up and say “Here I am. This is who I am and this is what I do. Take it or leave it.”
Trust is about people seeing that you are reliable and worth spending money on. It’s so easy to be manipulated online that most people have their guard up and are very cautious about what they buy online. Your marketing plan needs to include steps to build trust before you jump into making the sale.
Spend time having real conversations with people before pitching them. Share information that shows that you know what you’re talking about. Serve first and demonstrate that your heart is in the right place. Storytelling is another great way to build trust.
The real secret to making money online is through connections. By focusing on helping your audience know, like, and trust you, you’re establishing a relationship that will turn into sales. Make sure you build the know, like, and trust factor into your marketing plan so you keep this front and center of your content.
